Agree on what the meter measures
Ask the accommodation provider which meter belongs to your room and whether its reading covers the entire accommodation or only particular equipment. Confirm who records the opening and closing readings. If the meter is behind a locked service door, arrange an authorised reading rather than trying to access it yourself.
Get the billing method in writing: the charge per unit if applicable, any included allowance, other fees and how payment is settled. A property's guest agreement and the electricity supplier's tariff are different documents. Do not substitute a figure found online for the method in the agreement you accepted.
Make the first entry with the provider
Record the date, time, reading and identifying information needed to recognise the correct meter. A clear photograph is useful when the provider permits it, especially if the display contains several screens. Ask which number is relevant. A photograph of the wrong screen creates the appearance of precision without providing a usable starting point.
Keep the record somewhere both travellers can find. If the opening reading is supplied later, note when it was taken rather than silently treating it as your arrival reading. A missing number is a question to resolve, not a reason to estimate what the display probably showed.
Use one intermediate check
After several ordinary days, request or record another reading through the agreed process. Subtract the opening value to see consumption over that interval. Divide by the number of days only if you want a rough daily comparison, and label it as your observed period rather than a forecast for the month.
The first few days may include more cooling, washing or time indoors than the rest of the stay. A later check can therefore be more informative. Do not multiply a single unusual day into a confident monthly bill. Use the record to understand the pattern, then ask about unexplained changes.
A fictional example shows the arithmetic: an opening reading of 1,200 and a later reading of 1,248 means 48 units over that interval. It says nothing by itself about the charge. Apply only the agreed billing method, and retain the dates beside both numbers. If the display format is unclear, ask the provider to explain it before calculating.
Change one comfortable habit at a time
The Provincial Electricity Authority advises efficient cooling, including using a fan alongside air conditioning and maintaining equipment. For a guest, the useful action is to understand the controls and ask the host to handle servicing. Avoid opening or cleaning components you have not been authorised to maintain.
Try a modest setting adjustment if it remains comfortable for everyone. Close doors or windows appropriately while cooling, and use the spaces you actually need. Keep a note of a substantial change, such as spending a week mostly at home. Your notebook can show whether consumption changed, but it cannot isolate every cause or guarantee a particular saving.
Ask about a surprise while it is still small
If a reading seems inconsistent, check the dates, digits and meter identity first. Send the provider the relevant entries and ask for help interpreting them. Describe the observation without diagnosing a faulty meter or accusing anyone of overcharging. A transcription error and a billing misunderstanding call for different responses.
Report an appliance that behaves unusually through the normal maintenance contact. Do not try to solve an electrical problem by changing connections, bypassing controls or repeatedly resetting equipment. The notebook is a communication aid, not permission to inspect building systems.
Close the record before the airport journey
Agree a final reading and request an itemised calculation. Consumption should be traceable from the two agreed readings and the documented charging method. If a deposit is involved, keep the utility amount and the deposit settlement distinct so both parties can follow the arithmetic.
Save the final receipt with the booking documents. The most useful result is not a dramatic saving claim; it is a bill you understand and a record that can answer a later question. On the next longer stay, you can reuse the same simple format while asking fresh questions about that property's arrangement.
