Three days out: stop adding unfinished tasks
Check the confirmed checkout arrangement and the time you need to leave for onward travel. Ask the host how the handover works and whether someone will meet you. If you need a different departure time or luggage arrangement, request it explicitly and keep the answer with the booking details.
Review outstanding collections and returns. Retrieve laundry, collect repaired items and return borrowed equipment while there is still time to correct a mistake. Avoid starting a new service whose completion depends on the last morning unless the provider has clearly agreed a workable arrangement.
Reduce the final food shop
Plan the meals you will actually eat before leaving and buy only what supports them. Finish suitable existing ingredients according to their storage instructions instead of replacing every nearly empty packet. A larger promotional pack has little value if most of it will be discarded two days later.
Ask the host what, if anything, may be left for their use. Do not assume that half-used food, condiments or toiletries are welcome. WHO's food-handling guidance emphasises storage and clear handling; an unknown collection left in a refrigerator can create work rather than a useful gift.
Two days out: finish laundry with time to spare
Wash only what you can dry and pack appropriately. Follow garment and machine instructions, and leave a suitable outfit for the journey. Electrolux's care guidance distinguishes washing and drying requirements, which matters when a rushed final load includes items needing different treatment.
Check balconies, drying racks, drawers and laundry-service receipts. Keep any wet items separate until they can be dealt with properly. Do not make the suitcase the place where damp belongings are left to finish drying.
Arrange the final calculation
If utilities are metered, agree who will record the closing readings and when the bill will be available. Keep opening readings, the charging method and previous payments together. Ask for an itemised calculation that can be followed without relying on a verbal total given while you are carrying luggage.
Keep the deposit settlement separate from the cost of the stay. Confirm the process and timing under your actual agreement, and retain the relevant contact method. Do not promise yourself that an expected refund is available for an immediate onward payment until the arrangement supports that expectation.
The evening before: return the room to a clear state
Put furniture and equipment back where they belong if you were permitted to move them. Remove rubbish through the building's normal system and follow the agreed checkout cleaning requirements. Report any damage or unresolved maintenance concern directly rather than hoping it will go unnoticed.
Pack important documents, chargers and the items needed during the journey in an accessible place. Keep private booking records and personal data off any shared device. Check that you can still contact the host and onward transport after disconnecting from the room's internet.
Make one place for items that must be handed back and another for belongings travelling with you. Put access cards, borrowed adapters or other returnable items in the first group according to the handover arrangement. Keep your travel documents and charging cable in the second. Separating the two groups prevents a familiar object from disappearing into luggage simply because it has spent a month beside your own things. Check that the people sharing the room understand the distinction before the final sweep begins and before any bag is closed.
Departure morning: follow the handover you agreed
Do a final sweep of drawers, outlets, the safe if you used it and the drying area. Return keys or access devices through the authorised method. Secure the room as instructed and leave enough time to resolve a small question without missing the onward journey.
Save the final receipt and handover messages. If a payment or refund remains pending, record the next step clearly rather than treating the matter as forgotten. A calm departure comes from completing a few ordinary tasks early, leaving the last view of Phuket free from a hurried search for a missing key or a bag of damp clothes.
